Why is this gallstone in such an extravagant case? (Videotapes)

This ornate shell, now held by the New York Met, holds a mysterious secret, one that captivates the art world. Crafted from solid 22-karat gold, it exudes luxury with its intricate lace patterns and the presence of mythical creatures such as griffins, unicorns, and winged monkeys. The overlaid Mughal lattice pattern adds to its appeal and it is even supported by a tripod supported by winged monkeys, crowned by a regal bird. But what is truly curious is the paradox it contains. Opening the lavish box, one finds an unexpected sight—a simple brown stone, covered in gold, designed to imitate the gallstones of an animal, such as a goat or antelope, mixed with fur. and organic materials.

These curious objects, known as bezoars, have healing properties and are considered talismans. They were believed to cure diseases and were a valuable possession, even collected by Portuguese Jesuit priests in Goa. The contrast between the lavish exterior and the modest interior is the essence of this work of art. It challenges perception, reminding us that art often conceals deeper complexities. This object, with its fascinating duality, makes us reflect on the mysterious world it represents, a world where beauty and attraction are intertwined.
