Russian archaeologists believe they have found the wreck of a British ship carrying 30 barrels full of gold, which sank 160 years ago in the Black Sea.
Russian archaeologists discovered the wreck of the legendary British gold ship in the Black Sea.
According to Daily Mail, a group of Russian experts led by Viktor Vahoneev, head of the Department of Underwater Archeology at the Black Sea Bottom Research Center, recently discovered the wreck of the “Black Sea Prince”.
This is the legendary ship that was part of the British fleet lost in the Gulf of Crimea during the Sevastopol campaign in the 1850s.
One of the five shipwrecks at the bottom of the sea is said to contain the legendary “Prince of the Black Sea” ship.
The ship was said to be carrying 30 barrels of gold to pay soldiers participating in the Crimean War and to fund Britain’s war in the region.
The entire fleet of 34 ships departed from England but never reached their destination due to a severe storm. “We believe that these ships sank after a storm on November 14, 1854,” Mr. Vahoneev said.
Metal artifacts were found by a team of Russian experts inside the shipwreck.
In addition to the legendary “Prince of the Black Sea” ship, a team of archaeological experts also discovered four other ships while restoring the dock in the city of Yevpatoria in the eastern part of the Crimean peninsula, 1.6 km from shore.
Three of these five ships have the insignia of the British Royal fleet. The other two ships may be French ships. Analysis of the wreck showed that the three ships carrying British gold all sank due to storms and showed no signs of damage in battle.

The Russian archaeological team is trying to salvage the wreck. Artifacts found will be taken to the underwater ancient museum for display.
