In the town of Visoko in Bosnia there is one of the largest pyramids – only this one is in the form of a hill. The hill includes all the elements necessary to classify it as a pyramid: four steep slopes with a flat top.
The discovery of the Pyramid took place in October 2005, when archaeologist Semir Osmanagic discovered the entrance and underground tunnel after six months of excavations. Although excavation is not yet complete and the stone walls of the pyramid are yet to be seen, it is believed to be an ancient step pyramid dating back 12,000 years. If this is proven accurate, it will officially be the oldest known pyramid in the world and will completely change our current understanding of the origins of civilization.
Egyptian archaeologists who participated in the expedition in 2006 published a report in which they did not rule out the possibility that the pyramid was man-made and not naturally formed. Russian experts agree that it is man-made, while Westerners keep silent on the matter.
Some geologists and archaeologists believe that the whole thing is a hoax and nothing more than a natural geological formation. Furthermore, mainstream archaeologists have attempted to shut down Semir Osmanagic and his excavations, creating speculation as to whether he actually found something so ancient as to shake the foundations. archeology that we know about or not. Thankfully, a court case in 2011 decided in favor of the excavation and so they resumed.
Excavations continue today. A paved terrace was discovered as well as other man-made structures. If you want to participate in the excavation as a volunteer, you can check here for details.
Visoko is certainly an interesting place to visit, even more so if you participate in the excavations. You might even become part of an extraordinary discovery that will change history as we know it.
