London’s underground treasures

A series of ancient Roman jewelry pieces have been newly unearthed beneath a department store in London, England, dating back nearly 2,000 years.

A treasure trove of jewels was buried beneath the Williams & Griffin department store in Colchester town centre. According to Live Science, the unearthed jewelry includes gold bracelets, silver bracelets, silver necklaces, a small bag of coins, a large silver bracelet, a small jewelry box with two gold rings and two set of gold earrings.

Archaeologists said they were very surprised when they first discovered precious metals in this area. “The above discovery is very interesting to us. The jewelry found has great archaeological significance and historical value,” the archaeological team emphasized.

During this period of history, the Queen of the Iceni tribe, Boudica, led the native Britons against the occupying forces of the ancient Romans. The war ended when the Roman army won. It is assumed that the owner or slave buried the jewelry underneath the house for safekeeping.

Researchers believe that many other artifacts may also be discovered at the excavation site. Here, they found a number of human bones mixed with broken pieces.
