With just a cheap metal detector, an anonymous gold miner made the discovery of a lifetime in the area known as the “golden triangle” in Victoria, which was once the epicenter of the gold rush in Australia in the early years. 1800.

When he took his find to the Lucky Strike Gold store in the nearby town of Geelong for appraisal, the man was “extremely shocked” to learn its value. The rock weighing more than 4.6 kg contained up to 2.6 kg of gold and was bought by the owner of Lucky Strike Gold for $160,000.

“My jaw dropped when I saw it for the first time,” Darren Kamp, owner of Lucky Strike Gold, shared in a social media post last week. “This is the rock containing the most gold he has ever appraised in his 43-year career.”

Although Australia is estimated to have the world’s largest gold reserves, discoveries like this are rare. “Usually, people come to our store with gold or other stones that look like gold,” Kamp added.

The record for the largest block of gold ever unearthed in Australia belongs to a specimen called “Welcome Stranger”. It weighs 66 kg and is worth about $2.7 million, discovered by two miners in 1869, according to Museum Victoria.
