While constructing a plumbing system near Seville, Spain, construction workers discovered 600kg of ancient coins dating back to Roman times. According to experts, this is an extremely special and meaningful historical discovery.
Ms. Ana Navarro of the Seville Archaeological Museum, the unit that manages this ancient coin, said: “It is a unique collection of ancient coins, very rare to have similar discoveries.”
It is known that these thousands of coins date back to the 3rd or 4th century and are contained in 19 ancient Roman vases (with 2 handles). There is no specific number, but experts say it is definitely worth up to many millions of euros, about tens of billions of dong.
Some people believe that this “treasure” could be buried when newly minted and stored to pay soldiers or people working in the public system. The coins also bear engravings from the time of emperors Maximian and Constantine, which are believed to have not yet entered circulation because there is little evidence of wear or cracking.
“Most of the money is newly minted and some of it is silvered, not just completely bronze,” Ms. Navarro said.
Upon discovering this huge “treasure”, local authorities immediately stopped construction of water pipes and planned to excavate the area where the ancient coin jars were discovered.
